Pros: Completely self contained, owner and animal friendly, Set up is easy out of the box!
Cons: Bit loud during cycle, wandering pellets, scented cartridges smell a bit odd.
Absolutely love this Cat Genie that we bought from the manufacturer. Shipped to our door - we had it out and set up within 30 minutes or so, replacing our older electric cat box (that had issues galore) unit next to the washer, just in time for our trip to Mexico last Spring.
We originally picked this up on referral from a friend of ours, as we travel quite a bit and have periods of time where the cats are on their own for a couple of days to a week at a time. We were looking for something that would be self contained also, as paying someone to come in and check the box was getting a bit more expensive and cutting into our fun budget. Not to mention getting the kids to clear the previous boxs' container was getting to be a major hassle.
In the beginning, we had a few issues, as the waste hose didn't like sharing the space with our washer drain hose, and after flooding our laundry room twice ( would forget to reconnect the washing machine drain hose back before starting !) We finally found a way to keep them both connected. (I believe the manufacturer has a solution for this as well - but I never did getting around to checking on it)
We have two huge 20lb brothers that like a very clean box, so this has been a lifesaver! We have it set to go off three times a day and it does a really great job 90% of the time. If a small piece of fecal matter escapes the sifting cycles, it will get a bit stinky - but that is easily remedied by just keeping an eye on it from time to time. Also choosing a cycle that will run a bit more frequently tends to solve this issue.
We have never really had any issues with this product, though I will say the little pvc pellets that come as filler tend to stick to kitty feet (and human too) and get tracked all over the place. I tend my floors almost daily, so this isn't too much of an issue, but it is uncomfortable to step on them - the little buggers are sharp!
We have also found that any non-toxic washable pvc pellet (without the holes) will work nicely with this unit and have switched to a softer pellet that doesn 't tend to stick to the kitty feet as bad, nor is it uncomfortable to step on. This option is also cheaper over time and I find I don't have to send off for it. Most craft stores have these available.
I guess the only other thing I haven't been happy with, is that when the cartridge gets low - a very loud and annoying beep will sound. It is fine if it is during the day or when I am busy, but usually it goes off during the middle of the night cleaning, and won't quit until you hit the button.
Also if you are considering this product, make sure to always have a couple of extra cartridges on hand (usually saves money to do it this way too), as it will not perform if it is out of fluid. Usually we purchase in sets of 5 and restock when down to two. If we have to go out of town (which is regular) I make sure and throw a new cartridge in so I don't chance running out while gone. We still pay people to check in on them while we are gone (just in case) but much easier to find when the cat box care is no longer an issue.
The boys changed over well enough and have seemed pretty happy with it. Much larger than some boxes, they have an easy time getting in and turning around. Now if there was just some way to get the little pellets to stay put, I would be in heaven!
For those who own this model and having issues with pellets falling between the rotating bowl - there is a fix that someone has posted using common household materials and it works great! Just google Cat Genie modifications.
I would definately recommend this product and have many times!
UPDATE: There is also now a person on Ebay who has come up with a way to reset the chip on the sanitizer cartridges, and the kit he sells also includes a flat needle injector, so that you are able to refill the cartridges yourself with a non-toxic santitizer of your choosing, which puts your cleaning cost at around $1 +/- per cartridge (purchasing cleaner in bulk) and also allows you to run the system more frequently, at a cheaper rate. How much more green can you ask for!
