The Metrokane Rabbit Corkscrew: Yay - No More Cork Floaties In My Wine!

by mrs-j Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Dec 12 '04
Pros: Easy to use, works every time, fun at parties.
Cons: Expensive, foil-cutter doesn't work well.
"Honey, can you come here a minute?" I called to my husband, from my parent's kitchen. It was Thanksgiving and I had gone to open another bottle of wine. When my clan gets together, we consume a great deal of wine. Keeps us from killing each other. My ...

Get Rabbit Ears for Great Wine Reception

by heckonwheels , May 04 '04
Pros: Impress your friends! Quick, complete cork removal. Once learned, easy to use
Cons: Definitely has a learning curve, included foil cutter sub par, case hard to open, price
This was a Valentine’s Day gift from my wife. I do not know how much she paid for it, but let’s hope it was on sale (I’ll put $50 in the pricing of this review because that seems to be the going price on the shopping sites I used to look it ...

The Rabbit Didn't Die

by writer Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Nov 07 '02
Pros: The easiest way to open wine without whining.
Cons: Expensive, but worth it.
Yes, it's true, I do love gadgets. I also love gadgets that work. I've been through just about every type of wine opener there is, from the ah-ha cork puller, to the screw pull, to a plain old corkscrew. Sooner or later, they all leave something to be...

The "rabbit" corkscrew

by paulrobins2869 , Dec 07 '05
Pros: When it is working, its great!
Cons: Doesn't hold up to the newer corks. Price.
We love wine and have some every night. We have a collection of around 500 wines, not large, but respectable. For a long time we suffered with all the other types of corkscrews, and finally we broke down and tried "The Rabbit". I have now gone through ...

Stylish Corkscrew That Works!

by nc_penguin , Oct 28 '07
Pros: Stylish, efficient corkscrew.
Cons: Foil cutter. I wouldn't give this to older people or those with arthritis.
Until I had a Metrokane Rabbit, I'd been struggling to open bottles of wine. I had a "Waiter's Friend", a cheap corkscrew which required a lot energy to use. Now I have a Rabbit. Cost: This was a Christmas gift a couple of years ago so I don't ...

I didn't know opening wine could be so much fun

by ktayl_94510 , Nov 04 '02
Pros: Price and ease of use.
Cons: Corkscrew point dulled quickly, foil cutter is a disappointment.
I thought before I took the $100 plus dollar plunge into the deep end of the wine opening pool (the "Screwpull") I'd start out at the shallow end. I purchased my Rabbit in November of 2001 at Costco for about $43.00 inclusive of tax. I put it to use...

The Metrokane Rabbit is the easiest way to pull a cork

by kewaydin , Nov 15 '02
Pros: Easiest way to pull a cork
Cons: Poor foil cutter, hard to use with synthetic corks
This is a great gift for people who have everything and who like wine.

There are plenty of ways to pull a cork. Any cheapo corkscrew will usually do the trick. But there is something inexplicably satisfying about using the rabbit corkscrew to...

The Rabbit-: Not Just a Fuzzy Little Animal Anymore

by adeniso , Dec 16 '02
Pros: The rabbit uncorks wine with ease and enables quick release of the cork.
Cons: Unfortunately, this fun gadget is a bit pricey.
I have owned my rabbit for about a year now and I have never regretted spending on the initial expense. As an avid red wine drinker it is important for me to have a device which opens my wines with ease-- I have found none better that the rabbit....

It was a nice gift but ...
by need_help_now ,Jan 03 '07
Pros: I've seen this item work nicely at other peoples' parties.
Cons: I wish it would have pulled a barrel of corks like your ads.
We were given what we thought was a lovely gift but on about the second or third bottle opening the casting broke. Our friends got another. It has fallen apart and we don't know how to put it together. Maybe something is missing, like a little pin. It has been in the "junk drawer" for several months and I am about to through a much appreciated gift away.

Where can I get some answers?

Stops working quickly
by jm8627030 ,May 10 '06
Pros: Great for the first case of wine.
Cons: Seems to stop pulling very quickly.
I first had a rabbit knock-off, which worked great until it broke after 6 months.
I then got a genuine Rabbit, and am very disappointed. The foil cutter is not good, but the main problem is that after a couple of dozen uses, the screw now goes into the cork, and comes straight back out when I lever up, instead of removing the cork. It is now useless (though not broken!)

The Amazing Renee!
by reneeck ,Mar 07 '04
Pros: So simple to use! Sturdy.
Cons: Hard to remove the cork from the corkscrew itself.
I saw this amazing corkscrew at a friend's house and after playing with it for a few minutes, decided I could not use it. Another friend picked it up, got the handles around it, the corker up, over, and out and left me in wonder! I came home and immediately ordered myself one. Tonight my in-laws come over for dinner and in 2 easy steps, I had my wine uncorked and ready for the table.

This makes wine uncorking so simple. My husband and I had problems with getting other corkscrews to fit around the neck of the bottle and the traditional handle ones take Mr. Universe to pull out. (and he's governing California now so I think he's got too much else on his mind) My rabbit makes simple work of a hard task. I am still amazed!

Where's the repair kit?
by publicrecord ,May 02 '04
Pros: Easy to use, clever, entertaining for friends who haven't seen one.
Cons: Durability is the big problem, worse because there isn't an easy source of parts.
It's a clever, handy tool, sure enough. Mine, though, kept falling apart, and after a year or so a couple of small part scattered. I've searched the web and can't find replacement parts (a plastic bushing and a spring). If the thing can't be reliable, they should at least make parts available.

Junk not worth the trouble
by fred645 ,May 03 '07
Pros: NONE
Cons: Haven't pulled a cork yet!!!
I am a home wine maker,we have a glass of wine daily.I bottle my wine with real corks.I received "the rabbit" for a gift,it broke the first time we used it.Sent it back for ten dollars, waited quite a while to get it back and this one won't pull a cork out at all.The spiral just goes in and out of the cork.I went online to make sure I was using it correctly and I was using it correctly. So far home made wine 2 rabbit 0.I don't think it is worth another ten dollars to send it back.Good thing I didn't throw away my five dollar cork screw, which happens to be ten years old.

Fun, fallible, but good
by lazybrilliant ,May 04 '04
Pros: Fun. Good warranty.
Cons: They break. Don't use on synthetic corks.
These gadgets are great fun. But they don't work well on synthetic corks. And when they do break. Fortunately, the company replaces them if they break. No questions (just a bit of time, and it costs $10 for shipping).

This is a good one to buy, because Rabbit replaces it if it breaks. Just don't use it on synthetic corks.

Good until it breaks (and it breaks quickly)!
by gb4321 ,Feb 26 '08
Pros: Works well when new-fast and easy.
Cons: Gear mechanism not built to last; it will break.
I bought the first rabbit about 10 years ago; it worked well for about 300 bottles. When it broke, I returned it to Metrokane at my shipping cost and a $10 fee to Metrokane. Be aware, this was on a lifetime warranty at the time of purchase. The company now lists the rabbit as having a 2 year warranty (this is on metrokane.com's website). At the same time, the company indicates that the rabbit has a 10 year warranty if you are returning it! Is the warranty 10 years or 2 years? I can't tell; check their website in consumer services (10 years) and ordering the basic rabbit (2 years). I believe they need some quality control on both their corkscrew and their website maintenance. The company did replace the corkscrew; this time it lasted about 100 bottles before the rack and pinion became damaged. It's a cute looking item, but its lifespan is rather limited.
